he called it Outrenoir - beyond black. One morning he woke up, looked at a canvas he thought he'd ruined, and realized it wasn't the black that made it alive. It was the light bouncing off the surface. The striated texture of his paintings catches light, bends it, throws it back. Black stops being darkness. It becomes luminous.

 

Pierre Soulages spent seven years designing 104 stained glass windows for the Romanesque abbey at Conques in colorless glass, engineered to let natural light pass through without filtering it. Not a single color added. Just light, respected.

 

He died at 102, a few miles from Rodez where he was born.
