In 1956, Autherine Lucy walked into the University of Alabama - founded in 1831 with a whites-only policy - and became its first African American student.

The university rejected her. Then readmitted her. Then hostile crowds forced her out. It took decades for the institution to reckon with what she had done.

​

On February 11, 2022, they renamed a building after her.
She was 92 years old.
