The Famous French Collection

Niki de Saint Phalle's first recognized works were assemblages she shot at with firearms. Violent, furious, deliberate.

Then came the Nanas, monumental, colorful, fantastical sculptures of women, animals and monsters that looked like nothing else in contemporary art. Her style was labelled "outsider art." She was one of the rare women artists recognized in her lifetime in a field dominated by men.

For years she worked without safety precautions, inhaling toxic fumes from her materials.
Her art killed her. She died of respiratory failure.
She knew the cost. She kept going.
