Her work was first noticed for its violent, furious assemblages made with firearms. These assemblages evolved into naive, whimsical, colorful, large-scale sculptures of animals, monsters, and female figures.

Her idiosyncratic style has been described as "outsider art," and she is one of the few female artists to be recognized in her lifetime in a male-dominated art world.

 

Did you know?

For years, Niki de Saint Phalle worked with various materials, disregarding safety regulations and inhaling toxic fumes. Her art took its toll: she died in 2002, aged 71, because of respiratory failure.
