She was a celebrated French singer of cabaret and modern chanson, hailed as France's greatest popular singer of the 20th century. Admired by the likes of Jean Cocteau, she was controversial for performing for German troops during the Second World War, but was later thought to have supported the French Resistance, and despite her success endured hardship throughout her life.

 

Did you know?

Directly translated as "living in pink", "La vie en rose" essentially means looking at life through rose-coloured glasses. Living with a positive attitude or outlook, trying to see the beauty in the everyday; like you do when you first fall in love. And yet, her last words are said to have been, "Every damn thing you do in this life, you have to pay for...".
