Gabriel Fauré was born while Chopin was still composing. He died as jazz and the atonal music of the Second Viennese School were taking hold.
In between, he became one of the leading French composers of his generation — taught by Camille Saint-Saëns, who remained a lifelong friend. His most celebrated works came late, in a style of growing harmonic and melodic complexity that his earlier, more accessible pieces had given no warning of.
Most composers peak early and coast. Fauré got harder to understand as he got older.
His admirers followed anyway.
