An emblematic figure in France, he is considered one of the most accomplished poets of the post-war period. He wrote and sang over a hundred of his own poems, accompanied by his guitar.


In 1967, he was awarded the Grand Prix de Poésie by the Académie française.

His mother never went to see him on stage because he was rude and questioned religion. The day she died, Georges Brassens, before going on stage, said: 'This may be the first time she will hear me sing'".
