Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born into the French aristocracy. As a teenager he broke both legs; they never grew properly. He moved to Paris, took up residence in the brothels of Montmartre, drank heavily, and painted everything he saw.
The result was one of the most seductive and unsparing bodies of work in post-Impressionist art — cabaret singers, dancers, prostitutes, the whole decadent theatre of late 19th-century Paris. Nothing sanitized. Nothing judged.
In 2005, one painting sold at Christie's for $22.4 million.
