The Famous French Collection
César's artistic vision was shaped by poverty. He worked with whatever was cheapest - scrap metal, junked cars, industrial waste - and compressed them into sculpture.
A few compositions and compressions later, French cinema asked him to design its own award. He gave them a golden compression. The César - younger cousin to the Oscar, nothing like it.
He had a thing for thumbs. The best-proportioned finger, he said. Only two joints, easier to scale up. And unlike the rest of the hand, it still reads as powerful at monumental size.
