Louis Le Vau designed the King's and Queen's state apartments at Versailles. He built the white stone façade facing the gardens - the one everyone photographs. Yet his greatest work was never Versailles. It was Vaux-le-Vicomte.
Versailles, for all its grandeur, was built fast and built cheap. Louis XIV wanted speed. Colbert wanted to cut costs. Craftsmen cut corners instead. The construction was flawed almost from the start.
It's still standing, flaws and all, restored.
