She was so nearsighted she couldn't make out faces in the crowd. Sharp-eared enough, though, to catch someone in the front row say: "God, she's ugly."

Barbara built a career entirely on her own terms - black dresses, kohl-rimmed eyes, a voice that confessed without ever fully explaining. Behind the persona was a childhood she rarely spoke of: in her memoir, published after her death, she revealed that her father had abused her starting at age ten.

She never said so on stage. The songs carried it instead.
